My name is Dr. Oleg Drut and today’s topic is “Why Does My Mouth Feel Dry with Braces?”
One of the side effects of having braces is dry mouth or decreased saliva during treatment. Not everyone experiences this; some patients do and some don’t. if you do experience this, I want you to know that braces can cause minor trauma to the teeth and gums. Braces occupy space in the mouth. This can result in decreased saliva production by the salivary glands. Make sure you drink a lot of water and avoid smoking and spicy foods if you have dry mouth. In case of dry mouth you can eat crushed ice. Decreased saliva production can cause decay, so make sure to visit your regular dentist every 6 months during orthodontic treatment. Also it is important to brush and floss at least twice per day and use an alcohol-free mouthwash.
