Can You Wear Invisalign With Dental Restorations?

Man with missing tooth wears Invisalign aligners

If you’re considering wearing Invisalign clear aligners to treat your malocclusions, but have oral restorations like crowns, implants, veneers, or bridges, you might be wondering if you’re even capable of wearing them in the first place. After all, Invisalign clear aligners are often fit around natural teeth. Moreover, would it be compatible, even if you’re missing some teeth in your mouth? Keep reading to find out.

Can You Wear Invisalign With Crowns?

Fortunately, crowns alone will not preclude patients from wearing Invisalign, through the majority of the time. The aligner trays can be molded to fit over the shape of the crown, just as they would any natural tooth.

However, patients will have to pay extra mind to removing their aligners, being cautious to just pulling on the edge of the tray, not their crown. Furthermore, they shouldn’t get a tooth crowned during Invisalign treatment, as that can throw off the aligner fit. This is one circumstance where Invisalign would not be compatible with crowning.

Therefore, it’s imperative that you either get the tooth crowned prior to starting Invisalign treatment or postpone the crowning procedure until after treatment is finished.

Will Invisalign Work with Dental Implants?

In most instances, yes, Invisalign clear aligners will also work with full dental implants. You might have some doubts about its efficacy, as implants, unlike natural teeth, are immobile and immovable.

However, since Invisalign aligners only treat a few regions of teeth at a time, this can easily be worked around under many circumstances. There may be circumstances where there are no viable workarounds though, like if:

  • The implant is situated close to the malocclusion (under certain conditions)
  • More than two teeth are implants (not always a dealbreaker, but sometimes can be)
  • Little to no natural teeth are left

Implants can't be moved, but this is not a limiting factor, as the rest of the teeth that needed to be moved, will be. Aligners will work around the implants. To arrange this procedure, schedule a complementary consultation with an experienced licensed orthodontist. They will have the expertise needed to pinpoint the appropriate treatments needed for your oral health needs.

Can You Wear Invisalign With Veneers?

As long as the veneer material is durable, fresh, and properly bonded, then yes — Invisalign clear aligners can be worn with dental veneers. Arguably, Invisalign clear aligners could be a little more viable with veneers than braces, as the orthodontic glue bonds better with natural enamel than veneer material.

As certain occlusal issues could emerge following the installation of the veneers, most orthodontists will recommend having them installed before proceeding with Invisalign treatment. Also, if you’ll need Invisalign attachments to make the aligners fit better, but the only viable area for those attachments is the veneer, then you may not be a viable candidate for wearing aligners and veneers together. Consult your orthodontist for more information.

Can You Wear A Mouthguard with Invisalign?

Not exactly. It’s technically possible to wear certain athletic occlusal guards over your Invisalign tray while playing sports, though not recommended. Those mouth guards should not be custom made and could fit over aligners during sport, but custom fit mouth guards are contraindicated with aligners wear. Athletes wearing Invisalign aligners can also just pop them out, practice or play, then pop them back in.

If you clench and grind your teeth, an Invisalign tray could fill the role of a nighttime occlusal guard, but only in mild to moderate cases of bruxism. If you deal with severe bruxism, however, you might not be a good candidate for Invisalign, as your teeth could chew through the aligners and damage them.

Will Invisalign Work with A Bridge?

In most cases, Invisalign can and will work with a dental bridge restoration; though bridges are fixed and cannot be moved, the natural teeth around them can. However, if the orthodontist feels that the bridge could disrupt necessary tooth movement, they may need to temporarily remove the bridge structure until treatment is done.

Because of this, most orthodontists will recommend holding off from bridge installations until after Invisalign treatment, if possible, unless additional factors dictate otherwise. If you already have a pre-installed bridge though, then consult your orthodontist about the best possible next course of action.

Can Invisalign Be Used with Missing Teeth?

Aligners are excellent choice for cases with missing teeth!

If you don’t already have implants or dental restorations, your orthodontist may recommend waiting until orthodontic treatment is completed.  During alignment, the gaps where teeth are missing could be filled with plastic that imitates the natural teeth, making an immediate fix of the issue. Aligners are excellent choice in cases with multiple missing teeth.

In some cases, your orthodontist may recommend having a restorative work done before your orthodontic treatment. In any instance, it’s always good to consult a trusted orthodontist to receive an invaluable second opinion from an expert, before moving forward with any big, complex, or financially costly decisions.
