Can I Eat Ice Cream With Braces On?

Yes, you may eat ice cream while wearing braces.

However, one thing to be aware of is that at the beginning of your treatment your teeth are likely to be more sensitive, so ice cream may not be the most pleasant treat during that time. Otherwise, you are able to eat ice cream as long as you are aware of any nuts or hard candy that may be in the ice cream.

However, you still need to be careful when eating sugary food. Because of the high sugar content in ice cream, you can cause damage to your teeth over time. This causes an issue because your braces might make treatment more difficult or impossible.

Foods to Avoid While Wearing Braces

Eating certain foods while you have braces can be a challenge. For example, make sure to avoid the following foods:

  • Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
  • Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice
  • Sticky foods: caramels, gum
  • Hard foods: nuts, hard pretzels
  • Sugary food: candy
  • Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

At first glance, this may seem like a lot of things you have to avoid. But once you notice what relates all these different types of food together, you will understand exactly what to avoid.

Hard Food

Biting into something hard or even chewy can damage or break your braces. Biting into an apple will cause your braces to be pushed up against a relatively hard surface. When this happens there is a good chance that your braces will be moved or broken by the surface of the apple.

All hard foods, in general, will cause the same problem for your braces. So before you pick up something and bite into it, think about what effect it will have on your teeth.

Chewey Food

Even food that is simply chewy can be an issue. Constantly biting down on something that may not be hard as an apple can still cause damage to your braces. When biting into a bagel, for example, it's not necessarily a "hard" food but it does take a lot of chewing because of all the bread.  And while bread may be soft, it's hard enough to dislodge your braces after consistent chewing.

Sugary Food

Sugar is the sneakiest one of the food types to avoid. Sugar does damage to your teeth over time. This can cause discoloration of your teeth. If your teeth change color over the course of your treatment, then when you get your braces removed there will be two different colors on your teeth.

The part of your tooth that is behind the metal bracket will be the same while the rest of your tooth will be a different color. This is not an emergency because there are many teeth whitening services that can balance out the issue fairly quickly and cheaply.

Because of the issues listed above, people often prefer Invisalign. You don't have to worry nearly as much about the food you eat. All you have to do is pop out your aligners before your meal then pop them back in once you're done. Simple as that!
