Can Veneers Replace Braces? - Video Guide

Interested in veneers? This cosmetic dentistry procedure is a popular, safe, and convenient option for achieving the appearance of straight teeth. But it ??s not the same as straightening your teeth!

In this video, Diamond Braces orthodontist Dr. Douglas Palaganas explains the difference between veneers and braces treatment ?? and why braces treatment helps you achieve a straight, beautiful smile all the way down to the roots!

Are Veneers the Same as Braces?

Veneers and braces are not the same things. Veneers are thin porcelain faces that adhere to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance and color. This is a cosmetic dental procedure that can be done by your general dentist.

On the other hand, braces treatment is a specialized orthodontic procedure that moves your actual teeth into better-aligned positions, to achieve straight teeth and a healthy smile.  Whether braces or Invisalign, orthodontic treatment can only be done by a licensed, trained orthodontist.

Braces are more than cosmetic: while a beautiful smile looks great on anyone, it also boosts health, improves oral hygiene, and can even lengthen your life!  There are many reasons to get braces treatment beyond just cosmetics.

While veneers may boost the aesthetic appeal of your smile, they don ??t do anything for the underlying health of your teeth and mouth. They are sort of a dental band-aid: they put a solution on top of the problem, without addressing what ??s underneath.  They are a shortcut to a good-looking smile, but the underlying conditions that led to your dissatisfaction with your smile remain unchanged.

To truly fix your teeth, by adjusting them into their correct positions, reducing crowding,  or other conditions , you will need orthodontic care by a licensed orthodontist.

Can You Get Braces With Veneers?

Depending on the type of braces treatment, it is possible to get braces with veneers. Because veneers are made of thin porcelain, chipping or breakage is always a concern. Due to the adhesive brackets necessary in metal or ceramic braces, these are generally not safe for use with veneers, since they could chip or break during bonding or de-bonding.

However, clear aligners like Invisalign generally work better with veneers, since they fit snugly over the teeth and don ??t require any permanent appliance on the teeth. This can be a good option for patients with veneers.

On the other hand, some providers may recommend you get braces treatment before getting veneers, or temporarily removing them for treatment.

If you have veneers and are interested in orthodontic treatment,  schedule a visit with a licensed orthodontist to discuss your case.
